What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can do about it
Split and Pay ("the App") lets you record shared expenses and keep track of balances with friends and groups. Doing that requires an account and a server, so unlike a purely offline app, some of your data is stored outside your device. This policy explains exactly what that data is, who can see it, and how to remove it.
The App is developed and operated by Burak Koçyiğit ("we"). You can reach us at any time at burakkocyigit1@gmail.com.
a) Account Information
When you sign up we collect your full name, e-mail address and phone number. The phone number is required and must be unique, because it is one of the ways other users find and add you. You may also add a profile photo. Your password is handled by our authentication provider and is stored only in hashed form — we never see or store it in plain text.
b) Content You Create
The App stores the records you and the people you share with create:
c) Preferences and Technical Data
We store your preferred currency, time zone, app language, notification preferences, and a personal QR code identifier used for adding friends. If you enable notifications, we store a push notification token for your device so messages can be delivered to it.
d) Contacts — Read on Your Device Only
If you grant contacts permission, the App reads your device contact list locally, on your device, to help you find people to invite. Your contact list is not uploaded to our servers, not stored, and not shared with anyone. Revoking the permission in your device settings stops this access immediately; the rest of the App keeps working.
e) Camera and Photo Library
Camera access is used for two things: scanning another user's QR code to add them as a friend, and photographing a receipt. Photo library access is used when you attach an existing image instead. The App only accesses the specific image you choose — it does not scan or index your library.
f) Payment Information
We do not collect, process or store any payment card or bank account information. Split and Pay records who owes what; it does not move money. Any actual payment between you and another person happens outside the App.
We do not sell your data, we do not share it with advertisers, and the App contains no advertising or third-party analytics or tracking SDKs.
Shared expense tracking only works if the people involved can see the same records. Access is therefore limited as follows:
Names already recorded in past activity entries are stored as a snapshot at the time of the event and are not retroactively removed, so that historical records stay readable to the people who were part of them.
Images you attach — receipt photos and group photos — are uploaded to our storage provider. Please note that these images are served from publicly reachable URLs: the links are long and unguessable and are not listed anywhere, but anyone who obtains a link can open the image without signing in. Please avoid attaching photos containing sensitive personal information. Deleting the related expense or group removes the image reference from the App.
a) Supabase
We use Supabase for authentication, database and file storage. Your account and the records described above are stored on Supabase infrastructure. See the Supabase Privacy Policy.
b) Expo Push Notification Service
Push notifications are delivered through Expo's notification service, which relays them to Apple and Google. The message content and your device push token pass through this service. See the Expo Privacy Policy.
c) App Stores
The App is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Their own privacy policies apply to the download and installation process.
Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can request deletion of your account and its data at any time by writing to burakkocyigit1@gmail.com. When an account is deleted, the profile, expenses and splits belonging to it are removed.
One limitation is worth stating plainly: records that are shared with other people — for example an expense that also includes a friend, or an activity entry in their history — may remain visible to those users, because the record is also theirs. We remove your personal profile data; we cannot erase another person's copy of a shared financial record.
No system is perfectly secure, but we take these measures seriously and fix issues promptly when they are reported.
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
You have the right to:
To exercise any of these, write to burakkocyigit1@gmail.com.
This policy may be updated as the App evolves. Significant changes will be announced within the App. Continuing to use the App after an update means you accept the revised policy.
